Les 5 Chefs Brings Quality Traditional Dining

A Restaurant with a Long History

Les 5 Chefs was founded by Harry and Claudio. Harry came to Shenzhen China working in quality control and realized that the traditional European dishes that he loved back home were not available in local restaurants. After meeting his partner Claudio, they both opened the Les 5 Chefs cooking school. The school was a big success with two to three classes. Later they would be offered a location in Shekou where they would open a German Bakery later to become a full dining experience with two locations.

 

Harry (Head chef) comes from a lineage of over 500 years of restaurant business history. He is from a family of 8 children – five of whom are restaurant owners. He has taken recipes from his family that has been loved and appreciated in Germany, France and other parts of Europe. Harry’s Grandmother Caroline was the Chef for Franz Josef I from 1881 until 1916 when his empire crumbled. At this point, she would return to Pressburg, which is close to Vienna and continue her restaurant career. Caroline would later teach her eldest grandson Walter the family recipes and he would later teach his younger brother Harry while he worked in his brother's restaurant for 7 years. That said, Harry takes pride in the fact that his food is authentic and made from recipes dating back to his great grandmother. These same recipes are the ones offered today at Les 5 Chefs bringing a traditional comfort food to Shenzhen China.

 

No cans, chemicals or additives

One great thing that elevates Les 5 Chef’s above most of the others, is that all of their dishes are made in-house and without any strange chemicals and additives. This includes the bread, bun’s, pestos and sauces. This also means that bacon, sausages and smoked meats are all done in house. Harry, the head Chef takes pride in the fact that time and proper preparation is put into each dish and items that can be made in-house are made correctly.

At Les 5 Chefs, all meats are cooked low heat sous vide style - meaning that all the meat are vacuum sealed and slow cooked at low temperatures – many times in its own fat. This makes the flavor stronger and the meat tender. This is a style of cooking that has been popular in French and English cooking for quite some time and is rare to find in Shenzhen China – mainly due to the time it demands to be prepared. At Les 5 Chef’s, they stand aside the rest, because they are willing to take the extra time to make sure all of their meat is cooked in this manner.

 

Meats Done Right at Les 5 Chef’s

I personally feel that the steaks here are among the best in all of Shenzhen because they are cooked in this method and have a great flavor and tenderness. They are also vacuum sealed and slow cooked at low heat for an average of 6-9 hours before being grilled and served to make them tender and full of flavor. Sirloins at Les 5 Chef’s are trimmed of all fat and silverskin and then marinated, vacuum sealed and cooked for 5-6 hours. What I love about their beef tenderloin is that it is also trimmed of all fat and silverskin and only the center part of the sirloin (the rest is used in the burgers).

 

Another great dish that is very popular at Les 5 chefs is the Duck Confit. It is definitely the best I’ve had in all of Shenzhen. The duck is marinated for 12 hours and then slow-cooked for 12 hours in duck fat at low temperatures. The skin is grilled separately to give it a crispy texture while keeping the meat soft and tender. It’s served with mashed potatoes and thyme apple.        

 

Weekly Specials at Les 5 Chefs

Another great thing about Les 5 Chef’s is that they offer weekly specials that give you the chance to try many of their dishes at affordable prices. Their weekend brunch is Saturday-Sunday starting at 10:30 AM – 3:00 PM and features an A La Carte brunch menu filled with items such as their burgers (also cooked sous vide style), steaks and ribs. This special deal also includes special egg dishes, cold cuts and other breakfast favorites all for a price of 199RMB. There are also specials on their sirloin and rib eye steaks on Friday’s as well as all you can eat specials at the Shekou location on Thursday’s.

They are also known for their imported German beer ‘Herrrnbraeu’ which they are the exclusive suppliers for. In total, they have 15 different beers including non-alcoholic beers and traditional German beers – all of which are imported.

 

If you're looking for a restaurant with in-house made authentic French and German dishes, you need to give Les 5 Chef’s a try. Les 5 Chef’s gives a great quality dining experience for an affordable price beating out many of their competitors in overall price and taste. This has become one of my favorite places to dine.
